The Lanterne Rouge refers to the historical practice of hanging a red lantern on the caboose of a train so station masters know the whole train has safely arrived at its destination.
Fans of cycling also know that this phrase refers to the last-placed racer in the famous Tour de France. For the rider at the absolute bottom of the general classification, this designation is not an insult: they are a hero, symbolising the kind of professional who can’t be driven from the race no matter what, and who has successfully delivered in a long-suffering and stoic job. To enter the race, riders already represent peak performance, and yet about 20% of racers who start the Tour are forced to abandon due to illness, injury or simple exhaustion. The Lanterne Rouge outlasts them all with dignity, stamina, and grit in the toughest race on earth.
